Imposter Syndrome can be a real b!tch.
This is how I told that jerk to kick rocks.
Don’t be like this guy.
Jimmy Neutron will forever be a core childhood memory. He was a character that I could relate to because he was creative, innovative, and loved science and technology. Finally! A “cool” nerd.
If you’re a fan like me, you’ll probably remember the episode with professor Calamitous — AKA “the guy who could never finish anything”. Strangely, I find myself relating to him more often than not. Like him, I get excited about new ideas—a song, an app idea, a piece of content—and I dive in headfirst. The excitement is overwhelming, the possibilities endless.
But as time goes by, the “inner saboteur” as RuPaul calls it, rolls into town and brings my momentum to a screeching halt.
“You suck.”
“You aren’t qualified to talk about that.”
`${Creative’s} work is way better than yours.`
You’re an imposter…
(Bonus points if you caught the template literal…)
Sound familiar? A lot of us want to share our creations with the world, but are scared to do so. In today’s digital world, music, movies, YouTube— hell, even tik-toks — are so polished and sanitized that we expect way beyond our means from our vision.
Don’t compare your Day 1 to someone else’s Day 1000.
I challenge you to scroll back through the archives of your favorite content creator. You’ll likely find their early work looks a lot like yours—raw, unpolished, but genuine. The beauty of creation lies not in perfection, but in the message it conveys. Suddenly, the production matters a whole lot less.
Well, Paps, that’s all fine and good, but what about knowing my craft?
You do know your craft. Your skills gave you enough confidence to consider creating & sharing with the world, so clearly you know something about your craft. You’ve got the chops, and you’ll only get better with repetition. You’ll likely learn more along the way, making you an even better creative.
So what’s stopping you? Don’t be Professor Calamitous. Finish the damn project. Level up your creativity.
Paps.
