Weekly Pull Request: October 18th, 2024
Got some cool stuff in this one!
Happy Friday! It’s time for the Weekly Pull Request. Here are some cool things I came across throughout the week.
Table of Contents
Riffs
Beautifully Broken - Jelly Roll
Jelly Roll has been on my playlist for a very long time now. I learned about him when he was just rapping, and watching his journey to becoming one of the most popular artists in the world has been really cool. On this album, Pastor Jelly strips it down and writes some hard-hitting, raw and real music that the world desperately needs right now. As someone who struggles with mental health issues, I love that artists like Jelly Roll use their platforms for good and allow folks to understand that society’s “normal” isn’t normal, and beauty can come from the broken. It is okay to go through some shit.
Sorry y’all. Something about Jelly Roll’s music hits a deep part of my soul. I hope you all give this one a spin. Even if you don’t like country music.
Exhibition of Prowess - Kublai Khan
Punchy. Angry. Assbeater music.
This has kind of always been the persona of Kublai Khan. I remember the first time I heard “Balancing Survival and Happiness”. It was like a sonic, hulk-sized fist punching my ear drums. I think I might be naturally drawn to Texas metal & hardcore (thanks Pantera). They just seem to understand groove better than anyone else down there.
Anyways, it’s been cool to see this band grow over the years. Now go enjoy this sonic assault for the next 23 1/2 minutes.
Code
Svelte / SvelteKit
I learned a new framework this week, and it is pretty cool, not going to lie. Svelte is a frontend framework designed for building single page apps (SPA’s) or even hybrid websites/apps with SvelteKit. For my React Devs, think of Svelte as React, and SvelteKit as Next.
Coming from React, the learning curve was relatively small. There are a couple of nuance things that are unique to Svelte such as their state management (which I love).
I can definitely see myself using this more in the future. But for now, I built a web app that controls my Govee lights in my bedroom. Pretty neat! 🤓
Gear
We have a new addition to the family. If you follow me on social media, you probably saw a new guitar I’ve been playing. If you don’t follow me, the links are up top!
This thing is a Riff Machine.
Meet the Sterling Stingray Jared Dines Signature model. This is the only Sterling Stingray that comes with 24 frets, which is super cool. It has dual humbuckers, locking tuners stacked volume and tone knobs, and the black and gold with the maple neck is 🤌🏻. It also has a killswitch, which I thought was an interesting add. Probably won’t use it much, but still pretty cool.
Initial thoughts about this guitar: it is a riff machine! It sounds incredible for the price point. I can definitely see this as a reliable instrument for both the stage and the studio.
Should I put more music content out there? Let me know in the comments or by replying to this email.
That’s all for this week’s pull request. Let’s go ahead and merge this to main. I hope you have an amazing weekend!
